Spinalonga

The most well renowned isle on Crete, particularly after Victoria Hislop's bestselling innovative "The Island". This rock stronghold and fortress is established on the north-west entry of the Bay of Elounda. The fortress was constructed throughout Venetian times utilising construction material from a older fortress. It was constructed in 1579 by the Venetian benefactor Luca Michiel, as shown by the inscription on the lintel over the major entrance. It was part of the association of the protecting against of Crete, especially in contrary to the expansion of the Turks and the incursions of pirates.

When the Venetians were beaten and submitted Crete to the Turks, Spinalonga solely stayed out of their control. From 1669 until 1715, it was a refuge for Venetians, Hainidons and escapees. Subsequently until 1903, it was inhabited nearly solely by Muslims and when these last inhabitants left, the location became a leper colony as instructed by Greek government.

The state closed down the colony in 1957, and from then on the isle stayed uninhabited at the clemency of time until lately, when restoration of its buildings has commenced. The public buildings, the houses and the surrounding wall which are being restored, revitalize the history of the island and celebrate the magnificent beauty of the fortress, the island itself and the entire landscape.
